Sail on the crest of a wave with The Queen's racing yacht

VIP groups will be blown away when presented with the opportunity to sail around Scotland’s beautiful Western Isles on a classic 1930s yacht, which once belonged to Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. This once in a lifetime opportunity is now a reality as the legendary Racing Yacht Bloodhound is available for charter out of Oban this summer.

From 11 July until 24 August 2011, the 63 foot, fully restored Bloodhound will be based at Oban Marina. During which time she will be available for day charter for corporate groups or VIPs who wish to step back in time aboard this icon of British sailing, perfect for sailing enthusiasts, company incentives or team building. Up to 8 guests will be able to enjoy sailing through the stunning scenery of Scotland’s West Coast, as well as the hospitality of the Skipper and crew who are all former HMY Britannia ‘Royal Yachtsmen’. Guests can choose to sit back and relax while on board, or help the Ocean Master qualified Skipper and crew ‘man the ropes’.

Bloodhound was built in 1936, one of 3 yachts constructed to the 12 metre handicap rule by the world famous Camper & Nicholsons’ yard in Gosport. She was one of the most successful ocean racing yachts ever built, winning a long list of Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) races.

On the back of this outstanding racing pedigree Bloodhound was acquired by the Royal Family in 1962 as Prince Philip wanted a yacht that could be used for both racing and family cruises. Prince Charles and Princess Anne both learned to sail on her in the Western Isles. Prince Philip also had much success competing with her at the famous Cowes Week regattas around the Isle of Wight.

Bloodhound now belongs to the charitable trust that also owns and manages the
five-star visitor attraction, The Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh. Bloodhound is normally on view to visitors throughout the year as the centrepiece of a new Royal Sailing Exhibition, apart from the months of July and August when she will be available for charter.

Bob Downie, Chief Executive of The Royal Yacht Britannia is pleased to be bringing Bloodhound back to the West Coast.

“We are delighted to be taking Bloodhound  back to the waters on which she once sailed with the Royal Family. She is such an important part of British sailing history, and this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to step back in time.”
