Scotland triumphs with Adventure Travel Trade Association conference win
The win was secured following a lengthy review process and was announced at the recent 2009 Adventure Travel World Summit in Québec, Canada.
This prestigious four-day conference is expected to bring one million pounds into the local economy and is testament to Scotland’s ability to build on indigenous expertise and host large-scale international events. Adventure travel already accounts for £160 million which underlines Scotland’s position as a developing adventure travel destination.
“Hosting this summit is an excellent opportunity for both Scotland and the Adventure Travel Trade Association to highlight the many options for adventure travel, business and recreation in Scotland,” said Minister for Tourism Jim Mather.
Catriona Anderson, marketing manager, associations for VisitScotland’s Business Tourism Unit, added: “It is a huge honour to have been selected to host this event, and it was made possible only by working in partnership with a vast range of organisations from the Scottish Government to partners in the tourism industry which enabled us to put together a high-value, cost-effective event for delegates worldwide. This is proof, if proof were needed, that Scotland truly is one of the ‘must see’ destinations in the world and that we really are open for business all year round.”
Scotland’s successful bid hinged upon many factors: most importantly VisitScotland’s enthusiasm, planning and strategic vision; a supportive government at the highest levels, the country’s commitment to sustainable lifestyles; its world-class adventure travel resources; and its early and active engagement of regional partners to strengthen European involvement in the event.
“With such incredible destinations stepping up to host our adventure travel community’s annual gatherings, the Summit site decision-making process has become more and more challenging,” said ATTA President Shannon Stowell. “Scotland’s inventive approaches, understanding of the ATTA’s short- and long-term vision, and its commitment to our mutual success gave this emerging adventure travel destination the edge.”
