Bringing Business Tourism to Scotland Week

Scotland Week took place from 3-12 April, providing Team Scotland, made up of VisitScotland, the Scottish Government and Scottish Development International (SDI), with an unrivalled opportunity to target the largest overseas market. Neil Brownlee and Richard Knight of the BTU travelled to New York and Toronto for an action-packed schedule of meetings and events, with a number of highlights from a business tourism perspective.

A MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences & events) media lunch was held at Craft Restaurant, New York, where Chairman, Mike Cantlay joined the group for an opportunity to update New York’s top MICE and vertical media with Scotland’s new developments and plans for 2013/14, inclusive of Homecoming 2014, the latest hotel and venue developments and The Ryder Cup.

In Toronto a corporate workshop was held for 15 corporate planners, a result of 12 months of joint activity with our SDI partners. This was designed to inspire these key personnel to consider Scotland for their future meetings and incentives through the use of a destination presentation with four breakout sessions covering topics such as ‘Golf as an Incentive Tool’ and ‘New Developments & Luxury Scotland’.

A number of media and trade meetings were also held across the US and Canada, engaging with Fox News, The Globe and Mail, Elite Traveler, Ignite and Meetings & Incentive Traveler, and the team also participated in the launch of Scotland’s Homecoming campaign in both New York and Canada.

The trip incorporated a busy schedule of activity, designed to generate interest in Scotland and to make new contacts for future business relationships. At such an exciting time for Scotland with the ‘Scotland Welcomes the World’ events lined up for 2014, there were no shortage of opportunities to showcase the country’s highlights and generate interest in our innovative country.
