Flying the Flag in Frankfurt


As Scotland prepares to welcome the world in 2014 with the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup, there was no better time to showcase the dynamic destination than May’s IMEX exhibition in Frankfurt. Following the completion of a number of major infrastructure developments and endorsements across the country from leading global brands, there was much to shout about at the international show.

 

Members of the Business Tourism Unit were joined by a range of Scottish venues and service providers including Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, National Museums Scotland and VisitAberdeen in Frankfurt. The busy three-day programme included on-stand activities and presentations demonstrating the diverse developments taking place within the business tourism portfolio including new airline routes, hotel openings and the 2,000m2 extension of the EICC.

 

Over 8,000 international buyers attended the annual show which proved to be the busiest yet, with a record number of appointments carried out by the team and strong footfall on the stand throughout the show.

 

The Scotland stand had an action packed schedule of events, including a ‘whisky tour’ through Scotland and a fam trip reunion for any buyers who had visited Scotland previously. This activity created a real buzz and enabled visitors to experience the best of our famous Scottish hospitality whilst hearing about the very latest news firsthand.

 

An on-stand photography exhibition was also held celebrating the Year of Natural Scotland. The exhibition titled “Scotland through the lens” showcased the country’s natural heritage and dramatic landscapes and Edinburgh-based photographer Simon Williams was on-hand to tell the story behind the shots.

 

The 2013 edition proved to be hugely fruitful with the team receiving 20 enquiries with a potential value of £14million, building on the success of the 2012 show where 14 enquiries worth in excess of £4million were handled.
