Scotland to celebrate Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design in 2016

With the New Year now in full swing, Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016 is already under way.

The year-long celebration will focus on the richness of Scotland’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside the contemporary and cutting edge designs of today. From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion and design, the year will shine the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets and icons, as well as some of its unique hidden gems.

Scotland’s achievements in innovation, design and architecture will feature in a wide variety of events, festivals, exhibitions, business conferences and visitor attractions taking place throughout the whole country.

Business events destinations at the heart of the new celebrations include: Sir Norman Foster’s famous “Armadillo” Clyde Auditorium on the banks of the Clyde in Glasgow and part of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre; the city of Dundee – a centre for the gaming industry and now the first city in the UK to be recognised by UNESCO as a City of Design; and Edinburgh with its impressive New Town, characterised by its wide, symmetrical streets and tree-lined squares deigned by James Craig in 1767.

Future venue design and architecture will also play a role in promoting Scotland’s appeal to event organisers. Aberdeen’s planned new state-of-the-art arena, exhibition and conference centre, as well as the new V&A Museum of Design Dundee due to open in 2017 are just two exciting examples of continuing Scottish investment.

Scotland has been changing the world as we know it for centuries, one innovation at a time. Whether its car wheels, tarmac, the telephone or the television, all this was down to Scottish ingenuity. And Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016, looks set to continue to celebrate awe inspiring innovation, breathtaking architecture and brave, bold designs through new and exciting experiences and events.
